Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Author Guidelines

AUTHOR GUIDELINES

1. Scope and Originality

  • Submissions must present scholarly and original work that contributes to academic discussions in the fields of Islamic thought and civilization.

  • Articles must be unpublished and not under review in any other journal.

  • Manuscripts may be edited for clarity by the editorial team without altering the original content.

2. Language and Format

  • Articles may be written in English or Bahasa Indonesia.

  • The manuscript should follow the journal template and include, in order:

    1. Title

    2. Author’s name

    3. Abstract

    4. Keywords

    5. Main content

    6. Bibliography

3. Title, Abstract, and Keywords

  • Title: concise and specific, maximum 12 words.

  • Abstract: written in both English and Bahasa Indonesia, 150–250 words, summarizing:

    • Introduction

    • Methods

    • Results/Discussion

    • Conclusion

  • Keywords: 4–8 relevant terms.

4. Length

  • Manuscripts should be 15–20 pages (approximately 6,000–10,000 characters).

5. Citation and Bibliography

  • References must follow the Chicago Manual of Style, 16th Edition (Full Note).

  • Use a citation manager: Mendeley or Zotero.

  • Both footnotes and bibliography are required.

Footnote Rules

  • First citation: provide full details — author’s full name, italicized title, place of publication, publisher, year, and page number.

  • Subsequent citations: author’s full name, 2–3 words of the title followed by “...”, and page number.

  • Ibid. may be used; op. cit. and loc. cit. are not allowed.

6. Transliteration Guidelines

Tsaqafah follows the Library of Congress (LC) transliteration system combined with the model of the Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kemenag–Kemendikbud Joint Decree).

General Rules

  • Names can be written both in standard form or transliteration.

    • Example: al-Syahrastani (or as-Syahrastāni).

  • Uncommon or non-Indonesian terms are italicized.

    • Example: al-qawā‘id al-fiqhiyyah, isyrāqiyyah, ‘urwah al-wuthqā.

  • Popular terms are written without transliteration.

    • Example: al-Qur'an (not al-Qur’ān); objektif (not objective).

  • Book titles are written in the original language and italicized.

    • Example: Irshād al-Fuḥūl.
